How to Read a Research Peptide Certificate of Analysis

A Certificate of Analysis should be read as a record of what was tested, how it was tested, and which lot the result represents. It is not a universal guarantee of safety, sterility, suitability, or clinical performance.

Start with four matching questions

  1. Does the compound name and labeled quantity match the material?
  2. Does the lot or batch number match the vial or container?
  3. Does the report identify the testing laboratory and report or accession number?
  4. Do the stated methods actually support the claims being made?

COA fields, reviewed one by one

COA field What to verify Why it matters
Compound and labeled quantity Exact compound name, form, and stated milligram quantity. A report for another compound or fill quantity does not document the material being evaluated.
Lot or batch identifier The identifier on the report must match the label and fulfillment record. Analytical findings apply to the tested sample and associated lot—not every lot with the same product name.
Laboratory and report number Named laboratory, report or accession number, and a verifiable laboratory record when available. These fields support traceability to a specific submission and issued report.
Dates Sample received, analysis, and report dates where provided. Dates help establish the sequence and currency of the analytical record.
HPLC or chromatographic method Method, detector, wavelength, result, trace, and integration context. HPLC commonly addresses separation and relative detector-response purity under stated conditions.
LC-MS or mass spectrometry Expected mass, observed ions or mass, method context, and interpretation. Mass-based evidence can support molecular identity but does not independently quantify every component.
Quantitation or net content Measured amount, calibration or reference approach, units, and uncertainty when reported. Quantity is a different analytical question from chromatographic area percentage.
Other tests Sterility, endotoxin, residual solvent, water, counterion, or other tests only when actually performed. Do not infer an unperformed test from purity or identity results.
Authorization and verification Analyst or reviewer authorization, laboratory verification link, or valid QR destination. A QR code is useful only when its destination and document identifiers match the supplier, compound, quantity, lot, and original laboratory record.

1. Confirm the compound, quantity, and lot

Match the compound name, chemical form when stated, labeled quantity, lot or batch number, sample identifier, and report date to the material being evaluated. A report that cannot be connected to the exact lot has limited traceability. A certificate for a different quantity is not automatically interchangeable.

2. Identify the laboratory and report

Look for the testing laboratory, report or accession number, dates, and any analyst or reviewer authorization. When a verification link or QR code is supplied, confirm that it opens the laboratory or a clearly identified original record—not an unrelated supplier page or a PDF for a different company, compound, quantity, or lot.

3. Identify what each analytical method can establish

Different methods answer different questions. HPLC commonly evaluates chromatographic separation and relative detector-response purity under stated conditions. LC-MS or another mass-spectrometric method can provide molecular-mass evidence relevant to identity. Quantitative work requires a suitable calibration or reference approach. None of these methods, by itself, establishes every quality attribute.

4. Read the reported result in context

  • Determine whether the document reports identity, purity, quantity, or another characteristic.
  • Review method conditions, units, acceptance criteria, integration, and detection limitations.
  • Confirm that the displayed trace or spectrum belongs to the named sample and report.
  • Look for unexplained manual changes, missing method information, or unsupported marketing conclusions.
  • Keep purity, identity, quantity, sterility, endotoxin status, and safety as separate questions.

5. Check for evidence the report does not provide

A chromatographic purity result does not automatically establish identity, sterility, endotoxin status, concentration, or suitability for a particular experiment. Likewise, an observed mass consistent with the intended molecule does not quantify every impurity. Conclusions must remain limited to the scope of the performed tests.

6. Verify the certificate against the physical material

Frequently asked questions

What should a peptide COA include?

At minimum, it should identify the tested compound and sample, lot or batch, laboratory and report number, dates, analytical methods, reported results, and enough context to understand the limits of those results.

How do I verify a peptide COA?

Match the compound, labeled quantity, lot, laboratory, report number, dates, and methods to the physical material and original laboratory record. A logo or QR code alone is not verification.

Does an HPLC purity percentage prove peptide identity?

No. HPLC purity and molecular identity are different analytical questions. Mass spectrometry or other orthogonal evidence may support identity.

Can a COA from another batch document my vial?

No. Results should be connected to the specific tested sample and applicable lot. A report from another batch may provide background but is not lot-specific evidence for the material in hand.

Does a QR code prove a COA is legitimate?

No. The destination must be checked. The supplier, compound, quantity, lot, laboratory, report number, and original record should all agree.
